Senator Nwoko urges Igbo unity, advocates Anioma State creation

From Abel Leonard, Lafia

At the 2024 OTU Oka-Iwu Week, Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, appealed for unity among the Igbo people, emphasising its importance in addressing the region’s social, economic, and political challenges.

The Sun reports that the week-long event, themed “Strengthening Igbo Unity: The Quest for the Creation of a New State in the South-East,” brought together political leaders, traditional rulers, and cultural groups to deliberate on the path forward for the Igbo region.

Speaking through his media consultant, Mike Ogah Gabriel, in a statement sent to journalists on Sunday, Senator Nwoko called for a united front to tackle developmental issues and secure equitable representation for the South-East within Nigeria’s federal structure.

“The Igbo people must come together to achieve their collective aspirations. Unity is not an option; it is a necessity,” Senator Nwoko declared.

Highlighting the need for an additional state in the South-East, Nwoko argued that the region’s current political configuration does not adequately address its unique needs. He stressed that strategic collaboration among stakeholders is vital for advocating for the creation of a new state, which he believes would ensure equitable resource distribution and foster sustainable development.

Specifically, the federal lawmaker reiterated his call for the establishment of Anioma State to represent the people of Delta North effectively. He described the move as a step toward political inclusion, economic empowerment, and the advancement of developmental goals for his constituents.

“The creation of Anioma State is not merely a political agenda—it is a demand for justice and equity. Anioma deserves a platform to articulate its aspirations and contribute to the broader Igbo quest for balanced representation,” Nwoko stated.

The Senator urged all Igbo stakeholders to rally behind the cause, underscoring the importance of cultural unity and collective advocacy in realising this vision.

Participants at the event praised Senator Nwoko’s commitment to Igbo unity and his leadership in advocating for Anioma State. Many described his address as a clarion call for action and a beacon of hope for the region.
