Lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial District, Senator Aniekan Bassey has called for the establishment of a Federal College of Fishery Technology and Aquaculture in Akwa Ibom to boost interest in fish farming, which the people are known for.
The Senator made the call Tuesday, during plenary where he sought an amendment to a bill, the Agricultural Research Council Act (Amendment) Bill 2024, which has passed through first reading.
According to Bassey, who is the Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development, the Bill seeks to amend the Agricultural Council Act to establish the Federal College of Fishery Technology and Aquaculture in Uruan LGA of Akwa Ibom.
“The proposed Federal College is aimed at providing full-time courses for teaching, instruction and training in fishery technology, aquaculture, applied science, commerce, arts, social sciences, humanities and management,” Bassey explained.
The College, according to the proposal, will also carry out research in the development and adaptation of fishery techniques, make provision for the appointment of a Provost and the officials to carry out the administration and the discipline of students.
