A road traffic accident at Kasari village at the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway has claimed the lives of 10 passengers.
Witnesses said the accident involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GDW190XA, which collided head-on with a truck with registration number SMK 141XN.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kaduna Sector Commander, Kabir Y Nadabo, while confirming the accident said preliminary investigations revealed that 16 people – eight males and eight females were involved in the crash.
He said six people were confirmed dead at the scene while six others were uninjured. Four people were taken to the hospital in Rijana where they later succumbed to death.
The cause of the crash, Nadabo said, was “wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving,” saying that the bus caught fire due to the impact of the collision.
The occupants of the truck escaped unharmed.
The Sector Commander vowed to continue sensitising the public on safe driving culture and road behaviour, and to engage transport unions to caution drivers against road vices.
He said: “A Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GDW190XA experienced a head-on collision with a truck with registration number SMK 141XN, all commercial vehicles.
“A combined team of rescue operatives from RS1.114 Zhipe, RS1.16B Dutse Outpost, some officers from the Nigeria Police Force, and some military personnel conducted the rescue.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that 16 people—eight males and eight females—were involved.
“As at the time of rescue, six persons were confirmed deceased on the spot while six were not injured. Four were conveyed to the hospital at Rijana where they later died.
“The cause of the crash has been established to be wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving.
“On getting to the hospital, all the injured succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death number to ten persons.
“After the collision, the bus got set ablaze due to the impact of the crash, while those in the truck were not injured.”
