Nigerian Afrobeat singer, Rema has added to his impressive list of accolades as his global hit ‘Calm Down’ swept the 2024 ASCAP London Music Awards, winning both Song of the Year and Top Streaming Song.
While the Afrobeats powerhouse was dazzling at the Louis Vuitton’s Men’s Spring-Summer Show during Fashion Week in Paris on Tuesday, ‘Calm Down’ snagged the coveted Song of the Year and Top Streaming Song awards.
The song’s co-writers and co-producers, Michael Hunter, known professionally as London, and Andre Vibez, were also recognised for their contributions to the award-winning track.
The wins bring Rema’s American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, ASCAP’s awards tally to three; the most by a Nigerian/African artiste.
Rema is the most awarded African artist in 2024, with six awards won so far.
He has won 1 Trends Awards in Brazil, 1 iHeartRadio Music award, 1 ASCAP Pop Music award and 2 ASCAP London Music awards.
‘Calm Down’ recently became the first Afrobeats song in history to earn over one billion on-demand streams in the United States.
In August last year, ‘Calm Down remix’ with Selena Gomez became the first African song to hit the billion mark in Spotify’s history.
Selena Gomez went on to shower appreciation on Rema, for changing her “life forever.”
The duo teamed up on the remix of Rema’s global hit ‘Calm Down.’
The original version of ‘Calm Down’ was recognised by Guinness World Record as the first number one song on the world’s first regional streaming chart, MENA.
In November 2023, Rema joined other award-winning Nigerian artistes like Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, and Asake who have also had sold out events in the arena. He shut down the 02 Arena show in London with his show themed “Ravage Uprising”. The sold-out show of 20,000 capacity saw the likes of Nigerian celebrities and fans traveling all the way to London for the show that can described as yet another celebration of Afrobeats.
