The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and a Civil Society Organisation, Anti-Corruption, Good Governance and Human Rights Watch Network (AGHRWN), have expressed concerns over the recall and reinstatement of Bola Audu Innocent, a Chief Accountant in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, who is currently standing trial for alleged fraud and human trafficking.
The Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) had directed the recall and reinstatement of Innocent, despite his ongoing criminal trial, which has raised questions about the violation of public service rules. The TUC and AGHRWN have called for an investigation into the matter and urged the Attorney General of the Federation to probe the involvement of the FCSC, Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), and Office of the Head of Civil Services of the Federation (OHSF) in the recall.
The TUC has also requested the constitution of a panel to investigate the matter, while AGHRWN has demanded explanations from the FCSC, OAGF, and OHSF on whether there is a new public service rule that allows a public servant standing trial to be recalled and reinstated into service.
However, the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, Prof. Tunji Olaopa, has stated that the commission will review its earlier decision following representations from the civil service union and Congress.
