National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Executive Secretary, Anthony Ojukwu, has said “Private businesses must respect human rights in their practices across the country.”
Ojukwu made this statement in Maiduguri while launching an action plan to promote human rights in business practices in Borno State, the first of its kind.
He noted that businesses must integrate human rights into their practices for effective state-level implementation. According to Ojukwu, prioritising human rights and stakeholder collaboration is crucial, referencing Nigeria’s National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights.
“Adopted in April 2023, this plan promotes human rights from 2024 to 2028. Effective state-level implementation is crucial, as federal efforts alone are insufficient,” he stated.
Ojukwu assured that the NHRC will establish similar action plans in all 36 states and the FCT to ensure Nigerians’ rights are fully protected and respected in business practices.
Borno’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Hauwa Mohammed, commended NHRC for launching the first-ever action plan in Borno to promote human rights in business practices in the state.
“By working together, we aim to create a framework encouraging ethical, transparent, and accountable business operations, aligning economic growth with social justice and human dignity,” highlighting the importance of public-private sector partnerships in creating opportunities without compromising fundamental rights.
