Fans of controversial singer, Okikiola Habeeb, popularly known as Portable, were taken aback when he was crowned the ‘King of the Streets’ during a recent ceremony.
At the event, which featured some traditional rulers of Ore, Ondo town, Portable was dressed in a white outfit, surrounded by similarly adorned monarchs.
In videos that circulated the internet, one of the traditional rulers introduced the artiste to the guests, placing a green and white crown on his head. Inscribed on the crown were the words King of the Streets. Alongside this honour, Portable was presented with various gifts, while a lively crowd of spectators cheered in celebration of the crowning.
Since receiving the title, Portable has been visibly elated, sharing videos of himself dancing and exclaiming his newfound royal status. However, many fans took to social media to question the merit of his crowning.
An Instagram user known as The Conformist commented, “Wow! Congratulations to a king without a kingdom,” while another user, Chyddo, lamented, “Money has really ruined the world; nothing is given on merit or dignity anymore. Just have money and see the elders bow to your toes.”
Tynoni expressed concern over the integrity of tradition, stating, “Tradition is compromised.”
Sebastine Sylvester asked, “What political position is this? Where is this recognised in Nigeria?”
Another netizen, Merit Frames added, “This is why most of us don’t respect traditional authorities because what’s in the name of nonsense is this.”
In contrast, some supporters defended Portable, with Official MDG remarking, “Portable has done a lot of good things for the people of Sango Ota.”
