Police officers and personnel of the Bauchi State Command have been urged to be good ambassadors of the Force, in line with the policy objectives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, for a reformed Nigeria Police Force.
The assertion was made by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 12 Police Command, Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, during his familiarisation visit to the Command on Wednesday.
The AIG commended the constables for their dedication and commitment to duty, stating that the IGP is proud of them and urging them to continue their good work in upholding the image of the Force.
He emphasised that the IGP is making every effort to reposition the Force and enhance its vibrancy and friendliness, in line with global best practices for effective and efficient policing.
Speaking on the minimal negativity observed within the Force, he assured that necessary steps are being taken to remove personnel engaged in misconduct and called for collective cooperation to achieve higher standards.
The AIG further assured that the Zonal Command will support the State Command in ensuring the highest standards of policing, making Zone 12 peaceful and crime-free.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, stated, “We are confident that your presence today will serve as a beacon of inspiration, offering strategic insight, renewed purpose, and a shared sense of mission in light of our evolving security landscape.”
The Commissioner informed the AIG that the Command, which was established concurrently with the state in 1976, comprises five Area Commands (Bauchi, Toro, Azare, Misau, and Ningi); 34 Divisional Headquarters; 39 Outstations; 90 Outposts; and 12 Village Posts.
He added that the tactical units under the Command include the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Operation Restore Peace (ORP), and the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU). “In addition, we have auxiliary units under the Command’s jurisdiction, including 10 PMF, the Special Protection Unit (SPU), the Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU), and the State Intelligence Department (SID).”
According to him, “While it is practically impossible to achieve zero crime in a developing society, the Command has recorded various crime trends, such as kidnapping for ransom, farmer-herder clashes, and cattle rustling—primarily occurring in the outskirts and border communities of the state. Similarly, crimes such as armed robbery, car theft, phone snatching, and thuggery (Sara-Suka) often occur within the metropolis.”
Sani-Omolori Aliyu further stated, “In line with the Inspector-General of Police’s vision to reduce crime to the barest minimum, the Command has adopted and implemented several strategies, including enhanced patrols and visibility policing, such as mounting nipping points in crime-prone areas and conducting joint patrols.
“In addition, it has a focus on community policing through engagement with community leaders, quasi-security outfits, and the public to gather actionable intelligence; quick response to distress calls through the deployment of standby operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU), and Operation Restore Peace (ORP); and public sensitisation programmes—educating citizens on crime prevention and reporting mechanisms.
“It may interest you to know that the Command has recorded zero student abductions, reflecting the impact of our visibility policing and intelligence-led operations. In a bid to consolidate these gains, and in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s initiative to provide a secure atmosphere for institutions of learning across the country, the Command is on the verge of launching the IGP’s Safe School Protection Squad,” he added.
The CP further stated, “This squad will be equipped with state-of-the-art, real-time intelligence-gathering tools and highly trained personnel dedicated to safeguarding educational institutions across the state.”
He concluded, “Sir, your visit today is a source of renewed strength and direction. It reaffirms your leadership’s commitment to operational excellence, and we are deeply grateful for your presence and support. On behalf of the entire Command, I pledge our unwavering loyalty to your vision and mandate. May Almighty Allah grant you the wisdom and resilience to steer Zone 12 Command to unprecedented heights of distinction.”
