The Emeka Anyaoku-led group of eminent Nigerians, popularly known as the Patriots and non-partisans, has inaugurated an Advocacy Committee for the Actualisation of the People’s Constitution for the country.
The 17-member committee will be led by Prof. Anthony Kila, a renowned political economist and professor of strategy and development.
The Committee’s task will be to engage major stakeholders and members of the public across the country on what people’s constitutions entail and benefits.
Inaugurating the committee members, Chief Anyaoku, who is the former Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations and leader of the Patriots, said the committee would soon be reaching out to various segments of the populace, starting with members of the National Assembly.
A statement from the group on Monday said the inauguration took place as a hybrid event in Lagos and online and attended by leaders of the patriots, including General Ike Nwachukwu, Obong Victor Attah, Prof Anya Anya, Dr Bilikisu Magaro, Prof Remi Sonaiya, Elder Solomon Asemota, Ambassador Tokunbo Awolowo Dosumu and Senator Ben Obi.
In his acceptance speech, the new chairman of the constitution committee, Prof. Anthony Kila, thanked the chairman and leaders of the patriots on behalf of his led committee for the honour and privilege of saddling them with the role.
He announced that the committee would do all it could to inform, engage, and get input from various segments of the populace.
Kila noted that the committee would soon be interacting with members of the National Assembly, traditional leaders, students, as well as corporate Nigeria.
According to the statement, other members of the committee include Senator Shehu Sanni, Dr. Bilikisu Magoro, who will serve as executive secretary, Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, Alhaji Shettima Yerima, Dr Otive Igbuzor, Mr Samson Itodo, Madu Bright Alwell, Ms Ann Kio Briggs, Mr Fafa Dan Princewill, Mr Zaka Bala,
Mr. Kayode Samuel, Barr Affiong Affiong, and Mr. Salvation Alibor.
It will be recalled that the Patriots recently visited President Bola Tinubu to ask him to make a case for the people’s democratic constitution for the country.
