The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the apex socio-political body of the South-South region, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for releasing Rivers State’s statutory allocation.
The decision was hailed as a statesmanlike move during a media briefing by PANDEF’s new National Chairman, Ambassador Godknows Igali, at Uyo Airport on Saturday, 23rd November 2024.
Ambassador Igali expressed joy over the President’s action, noting that it serves as a significant relief not only to the people of Rivers State but to the nation at large.
He emphasised that withholding such funds could have led to the innocent citizens of Rivers State suffering indirectly from political disputes between their leaders.
The PANDEF chairman highlighted that the release of the allocation aligns with the reconciliation efforts being spearheaded by a High-Level Peace and Reconciliation Committee led by Obong Victor Attah.
He expressed optimism that this gesture from the Federal Government would complement ongoing efforts to foster unity and harmony within Rivers State and across the Niger Delta region.
Ambassador Igali used the opportunity to call on political actors, community leaders, and youth and women’s groups in Rivers State to lay down their grievances.
He urged them to emulate the Federal Government’s de-escalation strategy, supporting the reconciliation process initiated by elders of the region.
The PANDEF leader lauded President Tinubu for demonstrating leadership and inclusivity in addressing regional challenges.
He added that the move underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring equitable treatment for all states, irrespective of internal political tensions.
PANDEF also reaffirmed its dedication to peacebuilding and development in the Niger Delta. The forum called on all stakeholders to prioritise dialogue and cooperation in resolving conflicts, stressing the importance of unity for regional progress.
The statement was signed by PANDEF spokesman Chief Obiuwevbi Ominimini, who reiterated the forum’s support for the reconciliation efforts and urged all parties to remain patient and supportive during this critical time.
