The Customs Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Oyo/Osun Area Command, Dr. Ben Oramalugo has said that the show of respect for the traditional Institution and the recognition of its crucial roles are to further foster peace and security in the region.
The Comptroller stated this on Thursday during a courtesy visit he paid to the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, at the Olubadan Palace, Oke-Aremo Ibadan.
According to Dr Oramalugo, in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Kayode Wey, a Superintendent of Customs, the visit was aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service and the traditional leadership of Ibadan.
He said that both entities work together to promote economic growth, secure borders and enhance community engagement.
Further in his remarks, the Area Controller appreciated the honour to visit the monarch whose leadership and wisdom, he said, had greatly contributed to the peace and development of the ancient city.
“The Nigeria Customs Service values the support and cooperation of the Traditional Rulers to ensure that smuggling activities are curbed and that legitimate trade is promoted within Oyo and Osun states,” the PRO quoted Dr Oramalugo to have said.
The Comptroller also briefed the Olubadan on the activities of the Area Command, highlighting the its achievements in revenue generation, suppression of smuggling and trade facilitation.
He expressed appreciation for the peaceful environment that Ibadan provides which allows the Customs Service to effectively discharge its duties.
He sought for more collaboration with the traditional Institution to enable the Command achieve its core mandate and improve service delivery.
In his response, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on behalf of whom the Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade Salaudeen, spoke, applauded the initiative by the Customs Area Controller to visit him, saying that the act displayed a high sense of respect for tradition.
He also lauded the efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service in safeguarding the economic interests of the nation and protecting local industries from the adverse effects of smuggling.
The monarch assured the Comptroller and his team of the traditional institution’s continued support in combating illegal trade and ensuring the security of the region.
