The Oyo State government has announced plans to crack down on street trading and other related practices, with a commitment to restoring orderliness and improving the state’s environment.
Speaking on a government radio programme, Oro Oyo, the Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), Honourable Justice Aderonke Aderemi (retired), revealed that strict measures would be implemented to address the growing issue of roadside trading.
Justice Aderemi urged citizens to comply with the law and stop displaying goods on walkways and roadsides, warning that such acts now attract fines and penalties. “We must maintain a clean and orderly environment, protect our infrastructure, and create a welcoming atmosphere for both foreign and local investors, which will drive the socio-economic growth of our state,” she stated.
She highlighted the negative impact of street trading, including traffic congestion and harm to the state’s image, stressing that roadside traders would face strict legal consequences for their actions.
To enforce the new regulations, OYRLEA will work with the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. The enforcement team will embark on an extensive sensitisation campaign in major markets such as Bodija, Sango, New Bola Ige, Oje, Gate, Dugbe, Challenge-Orita, Aleshinloye, Eleyele, Akobo-General Gas, and Bashorun. Town criers will also be deployed to ensure maximum awareness before enforcement begins.
Justice Aderemi further stated that dumping refuse on road medians, roundabouts, drainage channels, and gutters is now illegal.
“This enforcement is not meant to create panic or misunderstanding among traders but to promote compliance, safety, and a thriving, law-abiding environment for everyone,” she assured.
