THE Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) on Friday said it had adjusted the notice of the local government elections billed to hold on Saturday, 22 February, 2025.
The chairman of the commission, Hashim Akintude Abioye, who disclosed this in a statement in Osogbo, said the commission has also adjusted the timetable and schedule of activities regarding the forthcoming election in the state.
“The present amendment dates back to and relates to the original notice, there is no change in the February 2025 date earlier given for holding the elections,” Abioye declared.
He stated that the commission considered the agitations from some stakeholders, especially the state Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), and resolved to adjust the timetable and schedule of activities for the election.
This, Abioye said, was to give more time for political parties to conduct their primaries so as to guarantee inclusive participation in the poll.
He stated that he had written to the leadership of IPAC to this effect.
He, however, described as untrue a news report that Osun is one of the states rushing to conduct local government election due to the judgment of the Supreme Court granting autonomy to local government councils as against the notice already published by OSSIEC since 19 February, 2024.
He said the report was reckless and baseless as far as the Osun State local government electoral process is concerned under the present OSSIEC.
