The ancient city of Ile-Ife will come alive on Saturday as His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi with the Araba Agbaye, Araba Awodotun Aworeni Mokoranwale II, Council of Arabas and International Council for Ifa Religion, prepares to celebrate the World Ifa Day and Yorùbá New Year.
The celebration marks a significant moment not only for Ile Ife but for the entire Yoruba community worldwide. As the birthplace of Yoruba civilization and the cradle of Ifa divination, Ile Ife holds a sacred place in the hearts and minds of Yoruba people, both at home and in the diaspora.
The celebration which officially commenced on May 26th has been filled with series of activities including Ifa worship, processions and different competitions. On Saturday, June 1st, the Araba Agbaye will consult Ifa as part of the rites to celebrate Ifa Agbaye and usher in the Yorùbá new year.
Araba Agbaye, the head of all Ifa priests worldwide, emphasized the universal significance of Ifa divination, stating, “Ifa is not just for the Yoruba people; it is a gift to humanity. Its wisdom transcends boundaries of race, religion, and nationality. On World Ifa Day, we invite people from all walks of life to join us in celebrating the universal principles of Ifa and the interconnectedness of all beings.”
