A 32-year-old man, Sunday Abilewa, has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly killing his father, Abu Abilewa.
Sunday allegedly strangulated his father after the deceased turned down his request to buy him a motorcycle.
The incident, according to the police, occurred on December 31, 2024, at Eberi quarters, Isua Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko South East Local Government Area of the state.
Sunday was arraigned before amagistrates court in Akure on Friday, and he was remanded in a correctional centre for alleged murder.
The prosecutor, Inspector Abdulateef Suleiman, informed the court that the defendant approached his father to buy him a new motorcycle, but the deceased refused.
“This led to an argument, and in the process, the defendant grabbed the neck of his father, which resulted in the deceased’s death. Efforts of the defendant’s mother to rescue the deceased proved abortive as the defendant was under the influence of hard drugs,” he said.
He said the incident led to Abdulateef’s death.
According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol.II, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
However, Sunday’s plea was not taken because the magistrate court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the murder case.
The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant in a custodial centre, pending the outcome of advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
In her ruling, the magistrate, Mrs F.A. Akinboboye, ordered that Sunday be remanded in prison custody pending receipt of advice from the DPP’s office.
She adjourned the case till February 25, 2025, for mention.
