From Okwe Obi, Abuja

The United Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UN-POLAC) has officially appointed Peter Ohagwa as its new Country President.

The inauguration ceremony, held in Uyo, marked the transition of leadership from Prof Mercy Funmi Adesanya-Davies to Engr Ohagwa, a seasoned peace advocate and conflict resolution expert.

The Imo State Coordinator of UN-POLAC, Onyenobi Samuel, in a statement yesterday, said Ohagwa’s new role is a testament to his unwavering dedication to peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and social justice advocacy.

According to him, Ohagwa has been instrumental in fostering harmony, mediating community disputes, and leading efforts to abolish the Osu caste system. His impact extends both locally and internationally, earning him recognition as a committed peace ambassador.

Prior to his appointment, he served as Deputy Country President of UN-POLAC, former Imo State Coordinator, UN-POLAC, Commandant of the Imo Peace Corps, and Director General of the Bureau for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Imo State Government.

His extensive experience in these roles has significantly contributed to the promotion of peace, unity, and societal transformation in Nigeria.

As the new Country President, Engr Ohagwa is expected to lead UN-POLAC to greater heights, strengthening its mission of promoting peaceful coexistence, human rights, and sustainable development. Established in 2001, UN-POLAC is an autonomous international institution affiliated with the United Nations and UNESCO. It was created in line with the UN General Assembly’s resolution declaring 2001-2010 as the Decade for Peace and Non-Violence, with a mandate to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UNESCO’s Culture of Peace initiative. The organisation plays a crucial role in maintaining peace, security, and the restoration of human dignity across Nigeria and Africa.

“We believe that under your guidance, UN-POLAC will achieve even greater success in fostering peace and security. Your visionary leadership will leave a lasting impact on Nigeria and beyond.”
