The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has affirmed that the local government election scheduled for October 5, 2024, will proceed as planned.
This announcement comes in response to speculation about a potential postponement of the local government election due to issues related to a court order.
In a three-paragraph refutation signed by the commission’s chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, RSIEC stated that there was no statement from the commission suggesting a postponement.
The statement, dated August 13, 2024, and made available to our correspondent on Wednesday.
It reads, “The attention of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has been drawn to a misleading article circulating on social media, falsely attributing a statement to the chairman of RSIEC regarding the postponement of the Rivers State Local Government Election scheduled for October 5, 2024, until the court order is lifted.”

The statement further clarified that Justice Enebeli “never issued or uttered any such statement at any time.”
“The general public is therefore advised to disregard and dismiss the article in its entirety, as it is false, baseless, and unfounded.”
“For the avoidance of doubt, it is hereby declared that the Rivers State 2024 Local Government Election timetable remains on course, and the election day on October 5, 2024, is sacrosanct,” the statement concluded.
