Former Enugu State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Ben Nwoye, has urged political leaders to exercise caution in their public statements, particularly those aimed at the judiciary.
Dr. Nwoye’s appeal follows a controversial statement made by the Southeast National Vice Chairman of APC, Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, in reaction to a court order that restrained Ugochukwu Agballah from acting as the APC Chairman in Enugu State.
Expressing concern, Nwoye emphasized that no individual is above the law, especially leaders who wield significant influence.
He criticized Dr. Arodiogbu for making statements that seemingly challenge legal rulings, warning that such remarks could provoke dangerous responses from the public.
“When political leaders assume the role of judges and make statements that defy legal principles, thereby encouraging the public to act outside the law, it becomes a serious issue.
“Obeying the law should not be conditional or based on personal interests; it is a duty we must uphold regardless of whose interests are at stake,” Nwoye stated.
He further emphasized that as a national vice chairman, Dr. Arodiogbu is expected to act as a guiding figure within the party, adding that “It is not within his right or discretion to unilaterally interpret constitutional matters.”
“The court has already ruled that Ugochukwu Agballah and certain others are no longer authorized to carry out their duties, and they are barred from accessing APC properties. Any statement from a leader like Arodiogbu that contradicts this ruling only serves to sow discord in Enugu State,” Nwoye warned.
Nwoye also revealed that credible sources have informed him of potential unlawful actions being contemplated by individuals emboldened by Arodiogbu’s remarks. He called on APC leaders, regardless of their factional affiliations, to be more responsible in their public discourse.
He also urged security agencies to heighten their vigilance and enhance protection around the APC’s Acting Chairman, Chief Alphonsus Nwafor, the presiding judge who issued the injunction, and all APC properties in the state.
