The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Council, has decried the continued rise in the cost of living across the country and tasked the federal government to ensure a reversal.

The union made the call in a communiqué following its first Congress of the year at its secretariat in Abuja.

Raising concerns over the state of the nation, the union urged relevant government authorities to improve the economic status of citizens and foster social development.

The congress presided by Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, brought together over 400 members and past leaders in attendance.

Other matters of urgent concern raised at the meeting include the poor supply of electricity and insecurity in parts of the FCT.

Comrade Ike described the escalating cost of basic goods and services as a heavy burden on Nigerians and called for immediate measures by the federal government to alleviate the hardships.

She noted the negative impact of erratic power supply on businesses within the FCT and called on relevant agencies to prioritize the restoration of basic amenities to improve the quality of life in the region.

“It is a privilege to welcome you all to this momentous first Congress of the NUJ FCT Council under our leadership. Today represents more than a formal gathering; it is an opportunity to reaffirm our shared commitment to unity, progress, and the collective good of our profession.

“The frequent disruption in electricity and water supply are pushing operational costs higher and reducing profit margins for businesses, placing an additional strain on the average Nigerian,” the communiqué stated.
