As part of efforts to encourage transparency and dedication to duty Management of Nigerian Railway Corporation, (NRC) recently celebrated a staff, Hayatu Ismail Garkuwa, for returning a passenger’s wallet containing $700 and other items during the just concluded free train ride.
Garkuwa had on December 28, 2024 found a wallet inside one of the waiting rooms of Abuja-Kaduna Train Station, Rigasa, and returned it to his superior officers.
He was honoured with an award for “Integrity and Exemplary Display of Honesty” during the quarterly town hall meeting alongside 20 members of staff including: deputy director public affairs, Yakub Mahmood for their dedication to duty during the just concluded presidential free train ride.
Director of Procurement NRC, Mr. Ben Iloanusi said the action of Garkuwa represents integrity, honesty and exemplary character which NRC staff are known for.
He presented Garkuwa with a certificate of recognition, cash token and gift while Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of NRC honoured him as an anti-corruption ambassador.
“We just concluded a free train ride under the directives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and through the supervision of minster of transportation.
“We felt there was need to recognise some of the key players that contributed to the success of the free train ride. So we started the year with it”, Iloanusi said.
Iloanusi who spoke in acting capacity to NRC, MD urged all members of staff to emulate the exemplary conduct of the staff.
The Nigerian Union of Railway Workers (NUR) on its part promised to honour the staff for his exemplary conduct.
NRC Director of Administration and Human Resources, Dr. Monsurat Omotayo said the staff including all the Directors were up and doing in ensurinf success of the free train ride.
According to a statement signed by Deputy Director, Public Relations of the Corporation, Yakub Mahmood (an awardee) about 20 staff were also recognized in line with management philosophy of encouraging staff for exemplary service.
