From Abdurrazaq Mungadi, Gombe

The Northern States Governors’ Forum has extended its heartfelt sympathies to the people of Borno state following the devastating flood disaster that has wreaked havoc on the state. The governors, who comprise leaders from various northern states, expressed their deep concern for the residents of Borno who have been adversely affected by the calamity.

According to the Chairman of the Forum, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the devastating tragedy which was caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam and submerged significant portions of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, including key infrastructures has displaced thousands of people and caused untold hardship in the state.

This was contained in a statement that was issued by the Director General (DG) of Press Affairs, Gombe State Government House, Ismail Uba Misilli, who explained that Governor Yahaya, on behalf of the 19 northern governors, extended assurances of solidarity and support to Governor Babagana Zulum and the people of Borno State, particularly those affected by the flooding.

“He also expressed concern for other states in the North and across Nigeria facing similar flooding incidents, urging the federal government and humanitarian organizations to bolster their relief efforts.

The Governor commended the swift response of the Borno State government and the efforts of emergency responders and other volunteers on the ground. However, given the scale of destruction, the Chairman called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to intensify their interventions to provide relief to affected residents, particularly women, children, and vulnerable groups,” Misilli disclosed.

He added saying, “He prayed for the protection and well-being of all affected communities, trusting that with collective action, the people will overcome this challenge and rebuild stronger.
