The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has clarified that there have been no reported cases of organ harvesting in any hospital or clinic in Akwa Ibom State.
The Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, Ben Essang, made this known in a statement issued in Uyo on Tuesday.
The statement, titled Clarification on Misrepresentations Regarding NAPTIP’s Presentation at Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Press Briefing, addressed concerns raised after a recent media briefing.
At the event, NAPTIP’s Public Enlightenment Officer in Akwa Ibom, Eme Ukpabio, highlighted global trends in human trafficking, including organ harvesting.
Her comments sparked concerns about possible cases within the state.
However, Essang clarified that Ukpabio’s remarks were not based on any specific incidents in Akwa Ibom but were intended to raise public awareness.
“The Zonal Command wishes to categorically state that the analogies presented were drawn from global trends and were intended solely to raise awareness, without specific reference to any factual occurrences in Akwa Ibom State,” the statement read.
He further noted, “While NAPTIP promotes public awareness on issues of organ harvesting, it is important to clarify that no reported incidents have occurred in any hospital or clinic within Akwa Ibom State. Human trafficking remains a pervasive global issue, and the public must remain vigilant and cautious, particularly concerning the welfare of children and adults.”
He called for public cooperation in the fight against human trafficking, urging residents to stay informed and report suspicious activities to relevant authorities.
