The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has condemned the ongoing harassment and attempts to arrest Mallam Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the Director-General of Media and Publicity for the Kano State Government.
A statement issued by the NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, and made available to the press in Kano, revealed that the police, acting under orders from Abuja, are still making efforts to arrest Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa despite a court injunction that prohibits such actions.
Johnson highlighted that these repeated attempts to arrest Dawakin-Tofa, which have included possible harassment of his family, are linked to a petition allegedly filed against him by Abdullahi Ganduje, a former Kano State Governor and the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, or individuals acting on his behalf.
The NNPP spokesperson criticized the police for their actions, describing them as a violation of the rule of law and a blatant abuse of power. He mentioned that Sanusi has been forced into hiding to avoid unlawful arrest.
“As the general public can see, the situation in Kano is now degenerating into a free fall with such abuse of power, intimidation and harassment of officials of the state government,” he said.

He, however, stated that “Since there is a court injunction restraining the Police, further attempts to arrest Sanusi cast a terrible slur on the image of the Nigeria Police,
This he added that it was a sad reminder of similar actions and posturing regarding the regrettable power game in Kano over the Emirs saga till date. Maybe somewhere along the way, the ruling party will realize how much the leadership of their party may have damaged their “brand”, especially in Northern Nigeria”.
The NNPP has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, a respected professional, to ensure that the police as an institution refrain from descending into partisan politics.
They urged him to direct his officers to stop the harassment and intimidation of Sanusi, who possesses fundamental human rights protected by law, and those rights should be respected.
