The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Kano state chairman, Comrade Kabir Inuwa, has called on the state government to address the long-standing issue of unremitted pension contributions by some organisations, which has accumulated to over N75 billion as of May 2023.
This backlog poses a significant threat to the financial security of retirees, leading to reductions in pension payments and non-payment of full pensions for years.
Comrade Inuwa made this assertion during his speech at the May Day celebration held at Sani Abacha Stadium.
He emphasised the need for a society that prioritises social justice and respects human dignity.
He commended the present administration for commencing full payment of pensions but urged defaulting government institutions to settle the backlog to enable the payment of retirement and death benefits.
In a speech read by Deputy Governor Comrade Abdulsalam Aminu Gwarzo, Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf reassured the commitment of his administration to enhance the welfare and working conditions of workers in the state.
He pledged timely payment of salaries and pensions and announced plans for a befitting Housing Scheme for workers, which will enable them to own houses at affordable rates.
The governor also highlighted his administration’s priority areas, including education, agriculture, and healthcare delivery.
He appealed to Kano workers to reciprocate the gesture through commitment and dedication.
