A United States-born Nigerian, Dr Oye Owolewa, has been re-elected as the Shadow Representative for the District of Columbia under the Democratic Party.
Owolewa stated this via his X page on Wednesday while thanking his supporters for his victory.
“Thank you DC again for giving me the chance to serve,” Owolewa said. “I also want to thank the organisations that have supported, partnered with, and endorsed me.”
He was first elected into the political office in 2020 and has been advocating the concerns of his constituents by lobbying for Washington DC statehood, universal healthcare, immigration reform, and income equality.
On election day, the politician stated that it had been six years since he contested an election for the Advisory Neighborhood Commission, which he won.
Born in Boston to Mr Ayo and Mrs Bolade Owolewa from Kwara State, Nigeria, Owolewa has been the voice of the voiceless, creating a presence for those who are invisible in America’s socio-political process.
