The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NigComSat) Ltd has entered a multi-year partnership with Eutelsat, a global leader in satellite communications, to deliver Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services in Nigeria.
The collaboration aims to provide high-speed, low-latency connectivity to various sectors, including government, enterprises, and underserved rural areas, enabling applications such as remote communications, mobile connectivity, and offshore operations.
Aisha Bantam, Head, Corporate Affairs Department in a statement late Wednesday, noted that Leveraging the OneWeb LEO network, positions NigComSat as a leading satellite service provider in the country.
Low Earth Orbit (LEO) which is a satellite’s path around the Earth at an altitude of roughly 500 to 2,000 kilometers, are known for their ability to provide faster and more reliable connectivity due to their proximity to the Earth’s surface, resulting in lower latency compared to traditional geostationary satellites.
Speaking on the partnership, Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, NigComSat’s Managing Director, described the partnership as a significant milestone in bridging Nigeria’s digital divide.
She said: “We are delighted to deepen our collaboration with Eutelsat, a globally renowned satellite technology leader. This partnership is a milestone for NIGCOMSAT, enabling us to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide through the cutting-edge capabilities of OneWeb LEO satellites.
“Together, we will deliver scalable, reliable connectivity solutions to foster growth across government services, businesses and communities nationwide.”
She added, ‘this partnership attests to the strong ties between Nigeria and France in advancing satellite and space technology. By joining forces, Eutelsat and NIGCOMSAT are poised to drive innovation, accelerate digital transformation, and open new opportunities for connectivity across Nigeria and beyond.’
