The National Diaspora Merit Award (NDMA) 2024, hosted by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), on Friday honoured 24 individuals from various fields for their contributions to national development.
The awardees were recognised in 13 categories, including Agriculture, Education, Engineering, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Medicine and Healthcare, Leadership, Media and Entertainment, Philanthropy, Science and Technology, Sports, Transportation, Volunteerism, and Distinguished Service.
In his keynote address at the National Diaspora Day Celebration and National Diaspora Merit Award with the theme ‘Japa Phenomena and its Implications for National Development, Secretary of NiDCOM, Sule Bassi, said the NDMA 2024 awardees were selected from a pool of 152 nominations received between November 15, 2023, and February 15, 2024. He said the Management of NiDCOM approved the final list after they were thoroughly screened.
Bassi who emphasised the importance of acknowledging the achievements of Nigerians in the diaspora, commended the awardees for their exceptional contributions and encouraged others to emulate their examples. “We must all, as Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, collectively work to develop Nigeria for Nigerians. No foreigner will develop Nigeria for us,” he stressed.
“The National Diaspora Merit Award is a national activity of NiDCOM to honour Nigerians in the diaspora who are excelling in various fields of endeavours”, the Bassi said.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism for the Government of Alberta in Canada, Akolisa Ufodike, has stated that Nigerians in Canada are making the country proud in the areas of technological innovation, sports and health.
Ufodike, who is the first Nigerian-Canadian in the entire Canada to head any national or provincial ministry, Ufodike described the term ‘JAPA’ as a reflection of the aspirations of many Nigerians seeking opportunities, highlighting the resilience of those who embark on such journeys.
He particularly, praised the Nigerian community for enriching Alberta’s cultural fabric, noting, “Our stories of success serve as beacons of inspiration.”
According to him, the term “JAPA” has become a part of Nigeria’s lexicon, capturing the dreams and aspirations of many Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad.
He noted that journeys of those who succeed are filled with both challenges and triumphs, embodying the resilience and determination that define Nigerians.
“I would like to acknowledge the enduring, positive impact of the Nigerian community’s efforts to promote and support cross-cultural sharing, not only in my province of Alberta, in Canada – but around the world.
“From pioneering advancements in technology and medicine to excelling in business, sports, and the arts, Nigerians have consistently demonstrated resilience, ingenuity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence – wherever they live around the world.
“Our stories of success serve as beacons of inspiration, showcasing the boundless potential that lies within each and every one of us. I see this day-to-day, even as I live and work on the other side of the globe.
“Alberta is home to thousands of Canadians of Nigerian descent, who are vital contributors to the province of Alberta. As a proud Nigerian-Canadian, I appreciate the positive example that our community sets”, he said.
Ufodike expressed the commitment of the Government of Alberta to ensure that it continues to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for all.
He said their goal is a province where everyone feels they belong and where one’s culture, language, and religion are valued and respected.
“Alberta’s government also recognizes the need to promote inclusion and highlight the importance of diversity.
“Albertans of Nigerian heritage have and continue to help drive our province’s future as respected leaders in their communities.
“In recognition of this, the Government of Alberta has declared the month of October as Nigerian Heritage Month in perpetuity.
“We can leverage the skills and experiences of Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute to international development. Strengthening ties between Nigeria and Canada can foster mutual growth and development as we explore opportunities for mutual benefit”, he said.
