National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday, lauded the media for its steadfast role in promoting human rights and amplifying the voices of victims of abuse.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr Tony Ojukwu, SAN, who made the commendation during a media parley held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, expressed appreciation for the media’s dedication to objective and balanced reporting on human rights issues.
Represented by the Director, Legal Services and Enforcement of the Commission, Hajia Rabi Anwar, the NHRC boss said, the efforts of journalists have significantly projected and amplified the programmes and activities of the Commission to the national and global audience.
“This year, we have witnessed extensive and impactful publicity around human rights issues, thanks to your unwavering commitment and professionalism. Your work has not only raised awareness but also increased security and accountability for victims of abuse,” Ojukwu said.
He said, through the work of journalists, many victims of human rights abuses enjoy more human rights awareness which assisted them to seek redress, a development he said, enhanced the country’s human rights ratings among the committee of nations.
The Commission underscored its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the media, pledging continued capacity-building support to enhance reporting on complex human rights issues such as migration, business ethics, and emerging concerns.
He said, “The Commission so much values your technique of story telling and your ability to narrate human rights issues in such a manner that our audience could appreciate and follow developments in the Commission”.
Ojukwu reaffirmed the NHRC’s dedication to transparency and partnership, emphasising the importance of the media as allies in the fight for justice and equity.
