The new Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU), Professor Samuel Asagba, has unveiled his vision for the institution.
According to him, he is poised to make the institution the first choice for Deltans and other Nigerians.
Professor Asagba made the declaration on Wednesday at the press briefing regarding the 17th Convocation Ceremony at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Site 3, Abraka, Delta State.
He said his administration would strive to make the university a centre of academic excellence and a breeding ground for high moral standards, devoid of cultism, examination malpractice, sexual misconduct, violence, and other social vices.
“In my vision for Delta State University, Abraka, I see campuses that are physically and aesthetically developed, offering a holistic and peaceful environment, with academic programmes that produce graduates equipped with marketable skills relevant to societal needs,” he declared.
Professor Asagba affirmed his commitment to providing adequate physical and infrastructural facilities to enhance academic programmes, with a strong focus on research that would bolster the university’s national and international reputation.
“The institution will have credibility and the potential to generate resources both internally and externally to augment government allocations—a university that fosters sound and cordial relationships with the private sector and maintains linkages with sister universities in Nigeria and abroad, as well as international education funding organisations,” he enthused.
The Vice Chancellor added that the university would be ICT-driven and committed to building strong relationships with the host community and other stakeholders.
He pledged not to derail from the vision of the founding fathers, which was to promote the advancement of learning throughout the state and Nigeria, and to provide opportunities for liberal education to all, irrespective of race, creed, or gender.
“The founding fathers of Delta State University aimed to advance knowledge, wisdom, and understanding through teaching and research, with the ultimate purpose of serving humanity,” he affirmed.
He stated that, having served in several key roles within the university, he remains committed to contributing to its growth and development.
“As a former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), former Provost of Asaba Campus, former Dean, former Head of Department, and a Professor of Biochemistry for 14 years, I have keenly followed and contributed to DELSU’s growth. I have dreams that will build on the vision of the founding fathers, the genuine foundations laid by past administrations, and the outstanding achievements of the present leadership,” he said.

He emphasised that his mission includes revenue generation and prudent fund management, stating that government allocations alone are insufficient to realise his vision.
He, therefore, hinted that additional funds would be raised through tuition and other student fees to accelerate the university’s growth and development.
Professor Asagba also highlighted strategies aimed at enhancing graduate employability and improving both undergraduate and postgraduate output in terms of academic content and job readiness.
He mentioned that the university’s research infrastructure would be upgraded, recognising its vital role in enhancing the institution’s profile and image.
Regarding institutional ranking, the Vice Chancellor stated that deliberate efforts were being made to boost global competitiveness and align academic and administrative activities with international standards and best practices.
He noted that the university would be connected to the global academic community through various Commonwealth schemes, offering both short- and long-term sponsorship opportunities for staff and students.
He further revealed that his administration would advance the use of information and communication technologies by enhancing the university’s ICT infrastructure, enabling DELSU to compete globally, deliver modern and engaging learning experiences, and support cutting-edge research and innovation.
According to him, infrastructural development—including water and electricity—remains crucial for the effective functioning of the university.
He added that the institution would engage stakeholders, both external (such as government, host communities, and alumni) and internal (including campus unions), to foster institutional growth.
He reiterated his unwavering commitment to staff welfare, professional development, empowerment, discipline, peace, and security—all of which are essential to the university’s progress.
He promised to carry all stakeholders along in achieving his objectives, anchored on the core values of competence, integrity, transparency, meritocracy, and accountability.
