The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved permits for captive power generation, totaling 63.36MW, for 11 applicants, including Nigerian Breweries and several universities.
Captive power allows these entities to generate electricity for their own use, boosting energy independence.
Nigerian Breweries has been granted permission to produce up to 41MW for its facilities in Abia, Oyo, and Enugu states.

In addition, six Nigerian universities, such as the University of Abuja, University of Calabar, and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, along with the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), have received permits for capacities ranging from 1.5MW to 12MW.
This decision underscores Nigeria’s shift towards more sustainable energy solutions and greater autonomy for vital institutions.
