The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) proposed an aggregate expenditure of N1.911 trillion for the 2024 budget, labelled “Budget of Renewed Hope,” before the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
Mr Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of the Agency, presented the budget to the House of Representatives Committee on NDDC in Abuja.
Mr Ogbuku highlighted that the primary objective of the budget is to achieve sustainable economic development, which aligns with the commission’s foundational goals.
He emphasised, “A critical focus of this budget is the commitment to a brighter future for the Niger Delta Region.”
The managing director disclosed that the commission recorded N683.2 billion in actual aggregate revenue inflows by April 30, constituting approximately 78% of the targeted N876 billion.
This includes N146.4 billion (122%) from the Federal Government and N394.5 billion (14%) from oil and gas companies. He also noted a carry-forward of N105 billion from 2023, despite facing challenges.
He further detailed, “The proposed personnel budget estimate for 2024 is N38.5 billion, and we are committed to managing our overhead costs projected at N29.2 billion.”
In response, the Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Suenu Ibori, stressed the importance of a well-structured budget for organisational success and progress.
She assured that the committee would thoroughly examine the 2024 budget to ensure its optimal utilisation.
“It is our responsibility as a committee to scrutinise your budget. Our goal is to ensure that they are realistic, achievable, and in the best interest of the region,” she affirmed.
Ibori commended the commission for significant improvements in sectors such as health and education, highlighting NDDC’s role in driving regional development.
She also praised NDDC’s ‘Operation Light Up the Niger Delta’ for its positive impact on local communities, noting areas for further enhancement.
