NAWOJ urged to champion democratic reforms

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, has reaffirmed its commitment to gender inclusion and media-driven democratic reform during a two-day capacity-building workshop for women journalists held in Sokoto.

The event, themed “The Role of Women Journalists in the Reforms of the Democratic Processes in Nigeria,” was organised by the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Humint Development Consult Ltd, and supported by the MacArthur Foundation.

In his goodwill message, the Chairman of the NUJ, Sokoto State Council, Usman Mohammed Binji, emphasised the indispensable role of women in journalism and democracy.

He lauded the legacy of female media pioneers such as Funke Durodola, Kadaria Ahmed, Bilkisu Yusuf, and Ngozi Nwozor-Agbo, noting that their courage, dedication, and commitment to truth had significantly influenced political discourse and national development.

“Women journalists have not only informed the public; they have shaped policies, amplified marginalised voices, and contributed immensely to nation-building,” Binji said.

“Their efforts are vital in advancing democratic values and civic education in Nigeria.”

Also speaking, Chairperson of NAWOJ Zone A, Hajiya Rabi Muhammad Gwadabawa, noted that the workshop is a timely intervention aimed at strengthening the skills and voice of women journalists in political reporting and media leadership.

On behalf of the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Aishatu K. Ibrahim, participants were urged to take full advantage of the training, as women’s increased participation in democratic processes is key to sustainable development, social justice, and good governance.

Speakers at the event underscored that women bring unique perspectives to leadership and governance and that their inclusion in political reporting can foster accountability and reduce corruption.

Participants were reminded that building a democratic society requires diverse voices, and empowering women journalists is crucial to achieving inclusive media representation and balanced democratic growth.

The workshop marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to promote gender equity in Nigerian journalism and to equip female reporters with the tools needed to drive political reform narratives in the country.
