The federal government says all is now set for the establishment of the National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC) to reduce over-dependence on foreign technology.
Minister of Innovation Science and Technology Uche Nnaji made the announcement at the opening ceremony of a three-day high-level policy dialogue and stakeholder engagement for establishing the National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC) and National Research Fund, NRF, in Abuja.
The minister stated that the president has already approved an inter-ministerial committee, under the office of the Vice President, to present a drafted document to the Federal Executive Council Memo for the establishment of the NRF.
“A Bill for the establishment of the NRIC and NRF is currently under review by the National Assembly. This legislation is critical as it will formalise the Council’s mandate and provide the legal basis for sustainable funding,” he noted.
He explained that the committee, which is composed of representatives from various key ministries and stakeholders, is tasked with creating a robust framework for the initiatives to thrive.
“This is a critical step in establishing the National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC) and the National Research Fund (NRF), initiatives that are set to transform Nigeria’s research and innovation landscape, which directly align with the President’s Eight-Point,” Nnaji emphasised.
“We are optimistic that the National Assembly will recognise the importance of this initiative and expedite its passage as soon as the Federal Executive Council completes its assignment.” He added.
The minister who called for collaboration among stakeholders across government agencies stressed that NRIC is positioned to serve as a bridge that facilitates partnerships, promotes joint ventures, and harnesses collective expertise.
On his part, the Executive Director of the African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS), Professor Nicholas Ozor, urged the government to hasten the establishment of NRIC and NRF.
He stressed the importance of prioritising research, innovation, and development in Nigeria’s national agenda.
“A thriving research environment is key to national growth. The NRIC will help set national research and development priorities, promoting a collaborative approach to innovation and mobilising funding for critical areas.
“The NRF will ensure that sustainable resources are available for transformative research and technological advancement,” he said.
