The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS has demanded for the immediate reversal of tariff hikes on data plans.
In a statement signed by NANS Southwest “Zone D” coordinator, Taiwo Owolewa, on wednesday, he stated that the recent hike in tariffs has created significant financial strain on students whom are already contending with economic challenges.
According to the statement, the increased hike in tariff is directly impairing Nigerian students ability to access critical digital resources for research, online learning, and other academic activities of students in educational pursuits.
While the students urged network providers , including MTN Nigeria to reverse the recent 50% hike in tariffs, restoring the previous pricing structure for data plans, to ensure that services remain affordable for the student community.
“The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the leading body representing Nigerian students both within Nigeria and abroad. We wish to formally express our grave concerns regarding the recent tariff increases implemented by MTN Nigeria.
“As you may be aware, a substantial percentage of Nigerian students, approximately 70%, depend on MTN Nigeria’s services for their communication and academic needs. The recent hike in tariffs has created significant financial strain on these students, many of whom are already contending with economic challenges. These increased costs are directly impairing their ability to access critical digital resources for research, online learning, and other academic activities, severely affecting their educational pursuits.
“While we recognize that telecommunications companies face numerous operational challenges, we believe the timing and scale of the tariff increase are especially burdensome for students. At a time when many families are grappling with financial hardships, the added pressure of these increased costs is exacerbating an already difficult situation for students, preventing them from achieving their academic potential.
“We urge MTN Nigeria to reverse the recent 50% hike in tariffs, restoring the previous pricing structure for data plans, to ensure that services remain affordable for the student community.
“ We request the establishment of a formal communication channel between MTN Nigeria and NANS. This would provide a platform for ongoing dialogue to address student concerns and explore collaborative initiatives aimed at supporting the academic success of Nigerian students.
“Failure to address these demands with the urgency and seriousness they warrant will compel NANS to mobilize its membership in a nationwide campaign of protest. We are prepared to initiate a comprehensive public awareness campaign, press conferences and nationwide demonstrations, including the shutdown of all MTN offices in the southwest region of Nigeria.
“To facilitate constructive dialogue and resolution, we propose a meeting between NANS leadership and your management team. We are available to meet within seven (7) days of receiving this letter. Kindly direct all communication regarding this matter to the NANS Southwest Coordinator at +234 703 735 2506 or +234 903 454 4760.
“We trust that MTN Nigeria will act swiftly and decisively to address this urgent matter in the best interest of Nigerian students.”
