From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kebbi State chapter, has condemned the main opposition party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for describing the N75,000 new wage in the state as a “mere declaration”.
State Chairman of the Congress, Comrade Murtala Usman, made the position of organised labour known in a statement made available to journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday.
Usman noted that although labour is not acting as a spokesperson for the Kebbi State Government regarding the implementation of the new minimum wage, the PDP’s comments were not in the best interests of the state’s workers. He stated that the opposition lacked accurate information about how the minimum wage system in the state, based on the Running-On-Review (ROR) framework, is being implemented.
“First, it is important to clarify that the Kebbi State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is not holding brief for the Kebbi State Government. Our role is to represent the interests of workers and to set the records straight where necessary, particularly on matters affecting employees’ welfare.
“The welfare of employees at the local government level is a matter of utmost importance. These dedicated individuals serve as the backbone of our communities, and their well-being should be a shared priority for all, regardless of political affiliation. It is equally vital to recognise the commendable efforts made by the current administration in addressing their needs.
“We must particularly commend His Excellency, Governor Nasiru Idris, Kauran Gwandu, for his remarkable leadership and commitment to workers’ welfare. Governor Nasiru Idris stands out as one of the first and few governors to immediately implement the new minimum wage following its approval by the Federal Government. This bold and compassionate decision underscores his dedication to improving the livelihoods of workers in Kebbi State.
“For any individual or organisation to call the approval and immediate implementation of the minimum wage in Kebbi State a ‘mere declaration’ shows either a lack of awareness or highly sentimental judgement.”
Usman highlighted the significant progress achieved under the current administration, particularly the prompt implementation of the minimum wage, which he said has greatly improved workers’ livelihoods by ensuring fair and timely compensation.
“Furthermore, other initiatives aimed at enhancing working conditions, benefits, and overall job satisfaction further demonstrate the government’s commitment to the welfare of its workers.”
Usman urged the opposition to adopt a fair and constructive approach to criticising the administration’s handling of workers’ welfare, emphasising that the PDP lacked proper understanding of the ROR system underpinning the implementation of the new wage.
“While it is essential to hold the government accountable, it is equally important to note that the payment of the minimum wage in Kebbi State at all levels is based on the Running-On-Review (ROR) system, which the opposition may lack knowledge of. Their hasty criticisms, without waiting for full implementation of the package, overshadow the strides made so far.
“We also recall instances when previous minimum wage thresholds, such as N18,000 and N30,000, were not implemented at the local government level. Reflecting on these past challenges will help us collectively ensure continued improvements.
“We challenge the opposition to name any state in the federation where the minimum wage was approved and implemented for local government employees, apart from Kebbi State. Unfortunately, good initiatives often attract saboteurs, some of whom may be politically motivated, spreading unwarranted pessimism.”
Usman also lauded the administration’s achievements in sectors such as education, infrastructure, security, health, and grassroots development, which include numerous political appointments. He argued that the opposition should acknowledge these advancements instead of engaging in baseless criticisms.
“In conclusion, we call on the opposition to engage in balanced and respectful discourse on this matter. Let us recognise the exemplary efforts of Governor Nasiru Idris and the current administration while remaining committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of local government employees.
“We also call on the good people of Kebbi State to ignore unnecessary criticisms by any frustrated group or individual, remain focused, and support all developmental policies and programmes of this government to take Kebbi State to greater heights.”
