Two miners from Kano State have lost their lives following the collapse of a mining pit in Niger State.

The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident to journalists in Minna, stating that the tragedy occurred on Sunday night.

According to him, the victims, identified as Buhari and Mallam Tasiu, were trapped when the mining pit caved in while they were working at the site.

“Police officers from the Erena Division, in collaboration with local residents, responded swiftly to the scene,” Abiodun said. “Unfortunately, the pit had already collapsed completely by the time they arrived.”

After hours of digging, the bodies of the two miners were recovered and taken to the Zumba General Hospital for further examination.

The police spokesperson added that a full investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collapse and to identify measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
