The non-governmental organization, Gender and Development Action (GADA), focused on combatting gender-based violence in Nigeria, has linked the incessant failure of marriages to a neglect of traditional marriage values.
Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, the founder of GADA, made this observation during the inaugural training session for prospective traditional marriage facilitators and counsellors, aged 12 to 18, at the GADA School of Traditional Marriage and Relationships in Calabar.
Toyo emphasized that the initiative aims to empower a new generation of Efik traditional marriage facilitators and counsellors, highlighting that Efik traditional marriages are a valuable cultural resource that can promote gender equity.
She noted, “Marriages face significant societal pressure, resulting in less harmonious relationships. We have observed a decline in the values associated with traditional marriage institutions. Nowadays, people focus on the ceremony rather than its substance.
“We researched the ‘Ufok Nkuho,’ often referred to as the fattening room; I prefer to call it the Efik finishing school, which played a role in preparing girls for marriage. Unfortunately, these preparatory practices have faded away, leading to a rise in quick marriage failures.
In her words, “Our hope is that by training young individuals as facilitators and counsellors, they will be better equipped to address future marital challenges. Serious issues arise in marriages due to the loss of traditional values.
“We seek to identify the positive aspects of tradition that can be preserved to enhance healthy marriage relationships while still respecting the equality of both men and women within marriage, she averred.
In a session called ‘Social Behavior Change Communication in Marriage,’ Mfreke Asigbe emphasized the importance of preparing Facilitators and Counselors to adapt to societal changes while effectively conveying values that promote healthier, safer, and stronger relationships and communities.
During the panel, Elder Iquo Oboko and Elder Uyu discussed the historical development and background of Efik traditional facilitators and counsellors.
In conclusion, Dr. Ihort Achu, the Director of Administration at GADA, urged participants to take the training seriously, highlighting that a solid understanding of marriage principles could provide them with financial opportunities.
