A 20-year-old man, Akeem Sumonu has been arrested by police in Ogun State for allegedly raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl.
The incident occurred in Olodo Community of Odeda Local Government Area of the state.
Sumonu was arrested by police on Tuesday following a complaint from the survivor’s mother.
The survivor’s mother identified as Christiana alleged that the suspect raped her daughter in October 2024 and warned her to keep it a secret.
It was learnt that the matter was blown open after the vigilant mother noticed changes in her daughter’s behaviour and confronted her.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ogun, CSP Omolola Odutola disclosed that the survivor hid the incident from her parents until her mother noticed unusual signs on her body.
“She then confided in her mother, revealing that the suspect had forcibly raped her, causing her to lose her virginity, and had threatened her not to tell anyone,” the police spokesperson said.
According to her, a medical examination of the survivor revealed she was eight weeks pregnant, with the pregnancy suspected to be a result of the crime.
“The suspect has been arrested and detained. Further investigation will take place once the case is transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department,” she disclosed.
