The West African Seafood Festival Expo 2024 is set to make its debut in Lagos from September 21 to 22 at Harbour Point, Victoria Island. This inaugural event aims to showcase the rich diversity of West African seafood and bring together industry leaders, enthusiasts, stakeholders and vendors from various sectors.
The expo, powered by Sharkhouse Foundation, will feature a handful of vendors, primarily Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), displaying a wide array of seafood products from across West Africa. The orgniser described the event as an excellent opportunity for businesses outside the seafood industry to connect, collaborate and explore, fostering valuable partnerships across different industries.
According to the Director of Sharkhouse Foundation, Ibinabo Oruitemeka, attendees will have the opportunity to view a documentary highlighting some of Nigeria’s most impressive seafood markets.
Oruitemeka said: “The event will include representatives from various sectors related to the seafood industry, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals and derivatives, transport and trade and tourism. “This expo aims to celebrate the seafood industry in West Africa while providing a platform for businesses to network and showcase their products.”
“It presents an excellent opportunity for industry professionals and seafood enthusiasts to explore the latest trends and innovations in the sector.”
“The expo will offer a diverse programme of activities and experiences for attendees. Key features include educational and networking opportunities; entrepreneurs can participate in educational masterclasses designed to enhance their knowledge and skills in the seafood industry.
“It will facilitate discussions involving various stakeholders, including government representatives, potential investors, industry leaders, research agencies, media outlets and service providers. These sessions aim to foster collaboration and address key issues in the seafood sector.
“The expo will recreate a local, cultural outdoor seafood market, featuring free stalls for the foundation’s market women beneficiaries, traditional cultural dances, live grilling demonstrations, and entertainment performances.
“This immersive experience is expected to appeal particularly to Lagos’ expatriate community, who are significant patrons of local seafood markets and potential investors in the sector.”
Established in 2019, the Sharkhouse Foundation has been working to address economic challenges faced by communities in Nigeria’s riverine areas, which are often affected by environmental pollution and perceived neglect.
Thus far, the foundation has positively impacted hundreds of indigent fishermen, older female seafood traders, local canoe builders, net manufacturers and other micro-contributors to the local economy. “This expo not only highlights the impactful work of the Sharkhouse Foundation but also aims to provide meaningful support to these communities. Attendees can expect a memorable and enriching experience that celebrates the seafood industry and its cultural significance,” Oruitemeka added.
