Kenyan athlete and current marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana reportedly died on a road near Eldoret town in western Kenya on Sunday night.
According to reports, the 24-year-old runner was driving in western Kenya when his car rolled over, killing him and his Rwandan coach.
In October 2023, Kiptum broke the men’s world record to win the Chicago Marathon in two hours and 35 seconds. Compatriot Eliud Kipchoge previously held the world record.
Kiptum set a new men’s world record marathon time of 2:00:35 in the Chicago Marathon in October 2023. He had only switched to running the marathon from shorter distance races a year before setting that record pace.
Kiptum improved his personal best time by 50 seconds to beat the 2:01:09 record set by fellow Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, who is widely considered the greatest marathoner of all time.
Confirming the development, Kenyan member of parliament, Gideon Kimaiyo said, “It is with heavy hearts that we learn of the passing of Kelvin Kiptum, the world marathon record holder, and his coach in a tragic accident along the Eldoret-Kaptagat road.
“Kelvin Kiptum was at the prime of his career, a legend in his own right. It’s a tough one to take.
“Our thoughts are with their families during this incredibly difficult time. The people of Keiyo South are saddened by this loss. May their souls rest in eternal peace.”
