The Kano State government has prohibted marriages between intending couples with similar genotypes that could lead to the birth of children with sickle cell anaemia.
A statement by the Director General, Media and Publicity to the State Governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa said on Monday that the policy was intended to prevent the birth of children with sickle cell anaemia.
“With this initiative, Governor Yusuf is not only tackling the root cause of the disease but also ensuring that those already living with it receive the care and support they need” the statement said.
The statement stated that the Governor was set to commission a state-of-the-art clinic dedicated to providing free, comprehensive care for patients living with the disease.
Accordinh to the statement, the State Commissioner of Health, Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, made the announcement during the flag-off of the 2nd Maternal and Neonatal Week 2024 in Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state.
The statement revealed that the specialized care clinic would be located at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
“The clinic will offer a wide range of free services, including diagnosis, consultations, medication, and surgical operations for sickle cell patients” the statement held.
“Governor Yusuf’s unwavering commitment to addressing the burden of sickle cell anaemia stems from promises made during his campaign, as outlined in his blueprint for healthcare reform ” it concluded.
