The Kano State government has appealed to local farmers to desist from selling their farmlands to foreigners and individuals with unclear identities.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Shanono town, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Safiyanu Hamza Kachakon, emphasized the administration’s commitment to addressing challenges faced by local farmers to ensure responsible land use.
He revealed plans to inaugurate a task force to regulate mining activities and prevent illegal land sales in Shanono Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Adamu Yakubu, the Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry, urged local government councils to enact by-laws to curb the trend and ensure compliance with regulations from the Ministry of Lands and Solid Minerals. He also appreciated Governor Yusuf’s dedication to leveraging the sector for Kano’s economic growth.
In response, the Chairman of Shanono Local Government Council, Abubakar Barau, outlined plans to invest in the mining value chains while cautioning farmers against selling their farmlands to unauthorized individuals. He urged the District Head of Shanono, Ibrahim Sani Gaya, to relay the message to grassroots communities.
During an impromptu visit to Monkey Rock Quarry in Rimin Gado LGA, the Commissioner directed the Quarry Manager to report to the Ministry for further briefings.
