Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Monday, extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger State over the devastating tanker explosion at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, which claimed 86 lives.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday morning, has so far claimed the lives of no fewer than 98 persons, including a pregnant woman and several children.

Eyewitness reports revealed that the victims were burnt beyond recognition while attempting to scoop fuel from the crashed petrol tanker.

Also, over 50 others sustained varying degrees of burns and are currently receiving medical care in various hospitals.

According to a press statement by Yusuf’s spokesman, Sanusi Bature, the governor described the monumental loss as a national tragedy.

Yusuf, who lamented the avoidable nature of the incident, called for urgent measures to prevent a similar tragedy.

“This heartbreaking event is a grim reminder of the fragility of human life and the need for collective responsibility in ensuring safety.

“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the families of the bereaved and the Niger State government. We mourn with you and pray for Allah’s mercy on the departed souls and a speedy recovery for those, who suffered varying degrees of injuries.”

The governor emphasised the need for public enlightenment on the dangers of scooping fuel from accident scenes and called on relevant authorities to enforce safety regulations on highways for the protection of lives and properties.

The explosion, which eyewitnesses attributed to an overspeeding petrol tanker driver that crashed on the ever-busy Dikko Junction, has left the community in shock and despair.

Despite conflicting reports on the death toll, with some accounts suggesting over 80 casualties, the National Emergency Management Agency confirmed that at least 80 lives were lost.

Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to supporting efforts that prioritise the safety and well-being of all citizens, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and cautious in such unpredictable situations.

“May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find the strength to bear this immense loss,” Yusuf stated.
