JNIM fighters kill over 300 villagers in Burkina Faso

Suspected fighters from the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) have launched a devastating assault on Guiedougou, a village in western Burkina Faso, killing an estimated 300 people.

The attack has been described as one of the deadliest in the region in recent years.

This was made known by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region, in a post on his X handle.

According to the report, the attack, which began at about 4:00 p.m. on April 3, came barely 24 hours after Burkinabe troops and Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland (VDP) concluded “Operation Tourbillon” in the area.

The military had claimed the operation successfully “liberated” the Sourou Valley on April 1 and withdrew the next day.

Eyewitnesses said heavily armed JNIM fighters surrounded the village and launched a coordinated, large-scale assault on civilians and local infrastructure. Most of the victims are believed to be residents accused by the group of collaborating with government forces.

JNIM, an al-Qaeda-linked group designated as a terrorist organization by the United Nations and several countries, claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the group accused the villagers of complicity in what it described as “crimes committed by the Burkinabe army and VDP against innocent Peuhl women and children.”

Security analysts say the swift and brutal response by the militants undermines official claims of territorial recovery and reflects the increasingly volatile security situation in the region.

The government of Burkina Faso has not issued an official statement on the massacre as of the time of filing this report.

The attack marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between jihadist groups and government forces in Burkina Faso’s troubled northern and western regions.
