The chairman of the Jigawa State Internal Revenue Service said the service has expanded the state’s taxpayers’ database by 200 per cent in efforts to digitalize tax and levies payment to block leakages and prompt revenue remittance.
This was disclosed by the chairman of the state’s Internal Revenue Service chairman, Malam Nasiru Sabo Idris in a speech delivered during a stakeholders engagement meeting at the service conference hall said the organization is committed to changing the revenue payment electronically.
Idris explained that “to that effort, we succeeded in expanding the tax payers database by 200 per cent that is from 5,000 in 2023 to over 15,000 in 2024.
“The stakeholders’ engagement is aimed at reviewing the progress made in the collection of the reinforced Consumption Tax, with a view to adopt the same method in the collection of direct assessment tax.
“To ensure the success of this initiative, the agency will engage the Jigawa State Enlightenment and Engagement Tax Team (JEET) in the collection of direct assessment tax, through the use of an electronic payment system as part of an effort to block the revenue leakages.”
Idris emphasised that the introduction of JEET has led to the improvement of tax awareness and increased the taxpayer’s database from 5,000 in 2023 to over 15,000 in 2024.
He also unveiled the agency’s plans to organize sensitization programmes and media awareness campaigns to enlighten the taxpayers’ on how to pay their taxes electronically for transparency and accountability in the process.
During the meeting, there was a question and answer session from the participants, to allow a deep understanding of the new policies introduced to harmonize the revenue collection in Jigawa State.
The stakeholders’ engagement has in attendance the Senior Special Assistant and two Special Assistants, to the governor on revenue matters as well as other stakeholders in the revenue collection.
