Stakeholders from Benue South Senatorial District have moved to address the ongoing crisis that has afflicted the region for years.
According to them, it is crucial that all parties collaborate to halt the continuous killings in Idoma communities.
This appeal was made during the recently concluded 28th Annual Convention of the Idoma Association USA, held in New Jersey.
The group specifically expressed concerns over the increasing violence in areas like Apa and Agatu, as well as other parts of Idoma land, which they find deeply troubling.
Edwin Ochai, the president of the group, highlighted that insecurity is significantly impacting the community’s development.
He said, “These senseless acts of violence not only claim precious lives but also instil fear and instability among our people. We must confront this issue with the urgency and seriousness it demands.”
Ochai further explained, “Without security, our aspirations for economic prosperity and social progress remain unattainable. A secure environment is essential for a thriving economy. Both local and foreign investors are deterred by the threat of violence and instability.
“Businesses cannot thrive in an unsafe environment. To attract investment, create jobs, and drive economic growth, we must first ensure the safety of our people and property.”
He also called on Idoma natives living abroad to invest in the development of youth back home.
In his virtual address, the Och’Idoma of Idoma, Elaigwu Odogbo, praised the association for preserving Idoma cultural identity and elevating its traditions and customs on an international platform.
He said, “I commend the consistency and dedication of the group in organizing the Idoma Annual Convention in the United States for 28 consecutive years. This reflects your deep appreciation for your cultural heritage and underscores your success in various fields.”
The monarch expressed concern over the ongoing attacks on the Idoma kingdom by criminal elements, which have resulted in numerous deaths and displacements.
In a video message, Dr Sam Odeh, the Deputy Governor of Benue State, addressed concerns raised by the association during a virtual meeting with the governor.
Although he was unable to attend the convention due to ongoing protests in Nigeria, Odeh assured attendees that the state government, led by Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has not neglected the Benue South Senatorial District.
Senator Abba Moro, represented by Mr Sylvanus Edache Ocheme, said, “As the Senate Minority Leader and representative of Benue South, I am aware of the challenges we face, from economic hardships to infrastructure deficits.
“Our mission is to turn these challenges into opportunities for growth. I urge you to maintain and strengthen these bonds. Our collective effort is crucial for progress.”
Other speakers at the event included representatives of Otukpo-Ohimini Federal Constituency, Lady Blessing Onuh, Rt. Hon. Anthony Agom, a member of the Benue State House of Assembly representing Okpokwu, who thanked Idomas in the diaspora for always thinking about home.
