The Imo State House of Assembly has berated tertiary institutions in the state for unnecessary delay of students’ results after graduation and called on Governor Hope Uzodinma to establish administrative policy to ensure prompt release of results.
The House reached the resolution following the adoption of the motion presented before it by Henry Agbasonu, member representing Ezinihete state constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly.
Presenting the motion, the lawmaker stated that non-release of results at the appropriate time has resulted in many people not getting any employment because of the non-availability of certificates to show that they really studied that particular course.
He further stated that lack of immediate issuance of certificates has delayed many students who wanted to further their academic career in other institutions or desire to participate in the NYSC programme.
“Such delays have continued to prevent many of our youth from studying in such institutions either for undergraduate or postgraduate programmes and it has continued to fester corrupt tendencies where people intentionally make things difficult for others in order to rip them off.”
Agbasonu observed that secondary and primary schools are not left out of the ugly scenario as First School Leaving Certificate results are delayed which he said can stop pupils from getting admission into secondary school.
He further observed that to obtain a transcript from someone’s former institution to study in another institution is a tug of war as it will take years for it to get it done.
The Ezinihete lawmaker wondered why students would be subjected to such bureaucratic processes that are not necessary before obtaining their results, maintaining that he was aware that there are some relevant bodies saddled with the responsibilities of processing results.
“Basis Education Certificate Examination, BECE, an examination written by JSS 3 students and First School Leaving Certificate, FSLC, is an examination written by Primary Six pupils and these examinations are conducted by State Ministry of Education through Examination Development Centre, EDC,” he noted.
Agbasonu, prayed that the House should urge Governor Hope Uzodinma to direct the Ministry of Education and EDC to release the BECE and FSLC results from 2020 to 2023.
He further urged the House to compel management teams of tertiary institutions in the state to ensure that their graduating students are no longer subjected to undue delays in the processing and release of statement of results, transcripts and certificates.
