The organisers of the Idoma International Carnival have revealed that the event has contributed over ₦3 billion to Benue State’s economy in the past 12 years.
The Vice President of Idoma International Carnival, Henry Ipole, disclosed this during this year’s carnival, which featured displays of rich Idoma cultural heritage.
Celebrating its 12th edition, themed “The Rhythm of Our Heritage,” the carnival brought life and colour to the heart of Idomaland, transforming the city of Otukpo into a vibrant hub of cultural expression, economic activity, and festive joy from December 23 to 26, 2024.
The festivities began on December 23 with the groundbreaking Idoma Nollywood Film Festival. This maiden edition celebrated the burgeoning talents of the local film industry, recognising outstanding contributions with awards.
Dr. Edwin Ochai, President of the Idoma International Carnival, represented by his Vice President, Henry Ipole, announced a generous investment of ₦10 million into the local film industry to bolster the growth of Idoma storytelling on screen.
The morning of December 24 was a spectacle of cultural pride. Masqueraders, adorned in intricate regalia, thrilled spectators with electrifying performances. Various cultural groups showcased the rich heritage of the Idoma people, drawing applause from revellers and dignitaries alike.
His Royal Majesty, Elaigwu Odogbo, Och’Idoma V, the paramount ruler of Idomaland, in his address, commended Dr. Ochai and his team for their tireless efforts in preserving and promoting Idoma culture.
“The Idoma International Carnival is more than a festival; it is our identity. I call upon all sons and daughters of the land, at home and abroad, to join hands with us in showcasing the beauty and heritage of the Idoma people to the world,” the Och’Idoma said.
Also, Benjamin Omale, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State, hailed the organisers for their consistent dedication to this annual celebration.
As the sun set on Christmas Eve, the carnival village came alive with electrifying performances by music stars, including Terry G. The artists left the audience spellbound, ensuring the night was filled with rhythm and dance. The evening set the tone for the following day’s grand procession.
On December 25, Otukpo, popularly called “Texas Town,” became a sea of colour and jubilation as the carnival procession took to the streets. Locals and visitors from across the globe, adorned in flamboyant costumes, joined the largest street party north of the Niger River.
Dr. Edwin Ochai, riding on horseback, led the procession through the city’s main streets, receiving cheers and applause from the enthusiastic crowd.
“This carnival is a reminder that there’s truly no place like home. It’s a celebration of our unity, resilience, and cultural richness,” Dr. Ochai stated.
The evening featured another musical concert where entertainers such as African China, Acapella, Slow Dog, and several others dazzled attendees. The carnival serves as a platform for discovering and nurturing talent. Many local entertainers who debuted on its stage have risen to prominence in Nigeria’s entertainment scene.
The carnival concluded on December 26 with the coronation of Daisy Ephraims Terkaa as the Nigerian Carnival Queen 2025. Representing Plateau State, Queen Daisy captivated the judges with her grace, intelligence, and stunning traditional attire. Her new role as a brand ambassador and her upcoming representation of Nigeria in India underscores the event’s global aspirations.
First Runner-Up, Queen Susan Ngusha of Benue State, emerged as Miss Tourism Nigeria, while Queen Rejoice Joshua of Anambra State was crowned Queen of Culture. Together, these queens pledged to use their platforms to advocate against social vices and promote the empowerment of the girl child.
The Idoma International Carnival is a celebration of the Idoma spirit, a testament to the community’s vibrancy, and a beacon of cultural preservation.
