In a deeply emotional letter, former Delta State Governor James Onanefe Ibori celebrated the 70th birthday of his brother, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, a respected elder statesman and former governor of the state.
The letter, filled with personal anecdotes and reflections on their shared childhood, was a touching reminder of the unbreakable bond between the two.
“Seventy years! As I pen these words, I am filled with nostalgia for our early days growing up in the backwaters of Mosogar and Ogharefe and joy for the remarkable man you have become—a statesman,” Ibori wrote, reflecting on the journey that shaped his brother into a distinguished public servant and accomplished medical doctor.
The letter recounts memories of their childhood, with James reminiscing about Uduaghan’s, whom he addressed as Brother Emma, supportive presence in his early years.
“I can still see your steady hands helping me find my balance as I learnt to stand and walk. I remember following in your footsteps around our neighbourhood and our days as young pupils navigating a primary school that lacked proper staffing,” James recalled, attributing these formative experiences to Emma’s lifelong commitment to serving the underprivileged.
Uduaghan’s path led him through secondary school, medical training, and eventually into politics, where he made his mark as a public servant.
“Each step led you farther from our daily lives together, but somehow brought us closer in understanding,” Ibori wrote, acknowledging the bond that remained strong despite their professional paths diverging.
Notably, Ibori highlighted the time Uduaghan served in his cabinet as Secretary to the Delta State Government. “You proved beyond doubt your commitment to our bond when you worked alongside your colleagues to help shape what many now regard as Delta State’s golden era.”
The letter also spoke of the deep personal connection between the brothers, with Ibori expressing gratitude for Uduaghan’s role in his life. “While our blood ties made us cousins, your love and guidance made us brothers,” James shared, referring to Uduaghan as his “little father.”
As Uduaghan celebrates his 70th birthday, Ibori concluded his letter with a heartfelt prayer for continued blessings: “May your 70th year bring you the same joy and light you have brought into my life, and may God continue to bless you abundantly.”
The tribute is a reminder of the importance of family and the powerful legacy both brothers have left on the political landscape of Delta State.
