Transferring ownership of a motor vehicle in Uganda involves a straightforward process, but it requires careful attention to detail to ensure compliance with regulations. Whether you’re buying or selling a car, motorcycle, or commercial vehicle, in this guide, I will walk you through the steps to complete the transfer seamlessly.

- Completed Transfer Application: Both parties must sign the application form.
- Valid Identification: Provide clear, counter-signed photocopies of valid IDs. These could be any of the following;
- Nationals: Use your National IDs.
- Foreigners: Provide your Passport and Visa.
- Refugees: Use your Refugee ID.
Step 2: Pay the Transfer Fees
Before submitting the application, ensure you pay the relevant fees to Uganda Revenue Authority(URA). This can be done through the bank or via Mobile money options usually after generating a PRN. The cost depends on the type of vehicle:
- Motor cars and dual-purpose vehicles: UGX 84,000
- Motorcycles: UGX 74,000
- Commercial vehicles, trailers, tractors, and engineering plants: UGX 104,000
You want to retain your payment receipt, as it will be required during submission.
Step 3: Submit the Application
You or the other party (transferor or transferee) must submit the application in person to Ministry of works. Third-party submissions are not allowed under any circumstances.
Key points to note during submission:
- Ensure all documents, including ID photocopies, are properly counter-signed.
- Double-check that both parties have signed the transfer application form.
